Priyankara Wickramasekara (83)
President 1996/1997

This year marks the 25th Anniversary of the establishment of the Richmond College 8090 Group. It is indeed with great happiness I send these greetings and the message to the committee.

25 years is a special milestone and what 80-90 today is a result of many sacrifices and commitment by its members and it was a long journey with much of strivings at times but with constant commitment and the true spirit of a cross-section of Richmondites made its way towards up to this stage.

My tribute goes to Mr. Rehen Goonawardene who was instrumental to brought up the idea of forming this group as it was obviously felt that being “young Old Boys” there was not much room to raise our voice at the main OBA in the late 1980s. I am proud to recall that I was one of the team members who met Mr. Suriyaarachchi at Royal College Principal’s Bungalow to inform him about the formation of the 8090 group. With the blessings of our great Principal, we managed to organize the inaugural meeting at the Royal College Hall. On that day I was surprised to see more than 100 young energetic Richmondites who have studied between 1980 to 1990 have gathered!

I am proud that I too had the opportunity to steer the group as a president once and was able to strengthen its activities as well as the financial position. Induction of “Paduru Sajje” and naming the annual get-together as “Gusto” are few to name with. I was fortunate to serve as a committee member until I migrated to Australia in 2011 I have seen the tremendous growth of the group over the recent years. I must mention that if not without the continuous guidance of our mentor as well as Patron Mr. Suriyaarachhi we wouldn’t have reached to this level. I will not be able to witness this historical event but I have no doubt that the event will make a great success with the able leadership of the president and his committed team. I wish all the best for all of you.

All for Richmond none for self!

Chavan De Silva (86)
President 2004/2005

A journey to Remember….

In 1993, many of us were perusing higher studies or just started our professional carriers or business ventures and only few had vehicles to run around. We all felt that we got to pay back our Alma Mater in simplest possible way, had a sense of responsibility to raise the flag of Maroon and two Blues fly high all time.

It was such a humble beginning of RCG 80-90 Group at Nawa Rangahala, Colombo in 1993 with sizeable participation of old boys representing this golden decade of 80-90 under the due guidance of our Patron Mr. B. Suriarachchi. I was privileged to be a founder member of this elite group, worked hand in hand with young, energetic and equally interested set of old boys to lay a strong foundation, solid pillars were built to cultivate comradeship among us who are from different walks of life and started to serve our Alma Mater from the very first year itself. To earn the blessings of our teachers, our first major project was “GURU UPAHARA ULELA” (Teachers’ Felicitation Ceremony) which was the most unforgettable one in this journey and we have many great memories to cherish with.

Today, we are standing tall and strong to celebrate its 25th Anniversary in a grand scale. Surely a proud moment for all of us. Our humble gratitude to our Patron Mr. Suriarachchi who has been with us through out and for his direction and guidance in moulding us to be who we are today.

“All for Richmond none for self”

Deshapriya Wickramaratne (86)

Little drops of water make an ocean…… The 80-90 group was started with a small number of like-minded Richmondites and with a very small aim in working together for the greater good of our College. Our intentions were small but we still dreamt big. As the President of 2015, it’s a pleasure to write few lines for the 25th Anniversary of the 80-90 Group. Looking back to the years, our family of 80 – 90 group has grown big in numbers and reached great heights to support our beloved College as well as the teachers who taught us. Our unity, commitment and the bond has set landmarks to the future Richmondites to serve their alma mater faithfully no matter where they will be in the world. As per all of us “Past Teachers AGM Lunch” was a great initiative of our group and we hope to continue this event in years to come.

I wish the 80 -90 group Goodluck!
